Tolkien J.R.R. Tolkien was born in South Africa, but moved to England when he was still an infant. Tolkien always had a passion for writing and would create languages with his cousin when he was young. He was a student at Oxford where he met C.S. Lewis, whom he shared his love of language, myths and storytelling. After he was married and had children, Tolkien would realize the power of his imagination while telling his son nightly bedtime stories. Years later in the 1930's, the idea of The Hobbit came to life.
He would go on to write Books of the Legendarium including The Lord of the Rings, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, The Silmarillion and more as well as The History of Middle Earth series with titles such as The Book of Lost Tales, The Shaping of Middle Earth and The War of the Ring. Tolkien died in 1973, at the age of eighty-one.
